WWII Medal of Honor recipient honored in Bell County

PINEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - A Bell County man who received the Medal of Honor for his actions in World War II was honored Tuesday.

Marine PFC Leonard Foster Mason died in Guam during a battle in 1944.

Enemies opened fire on his platoon and he lost his life while completing the mission.

He was awarded the medal of honor after his death.

Tuesday, Bell County officials dedicated a stretch of highway after him and held a memorial ceremony.

"We did something today that was long overdue in honoring a veteran who gave his life in 1944 and received the Medal of Honor. It was pretty special to get to honor him," said Judge-Executive Albey Brock.

Bell County officials presented a plaque to Mason's family. During the ceremony at the Bell County Courthouse lawn, the Honor Guard did a twenty-one gun salute to Mason.
