Water-covered roads delay Bell Co. drivers for hours

STONEY FORK, Ky. (WYMT) - Flash flooding made life miserable for some drivers in southern Kentucky on Wednesday.

Some people had to wait hours before driving through a section of Highway 221 in the Stoney Fork community of Bell County, where water covered the roadway and made it impassable.

Several coal trucks were among the stranded vehicles that finally made it through once the water receded.

"We started getting calls probably around 10:00 that Stoney Fork was washing away in Red Bird," Bell Co. road superintendent Bruce Nunn said. "So we immediately started sending equipment up this way."

Nearby homes were also threatened by the rising water.

Fields were flooded as creeks overflowed their banks and nearly caused more problems than the ones road officials were already combating.
