Copper Thefts Affecting Phone Lines

Once last week, and twice this week, those in the Red Bird area of Clay County have been without phone service for hours at a time because of copper thefts.

"We're in an area that's difficult to get communication into except through the wiring system," said Red Bird Mission's Executive Director Craig Dial.

Red Bird Mission is one area that depends on these phone lines to stay in touch with the outside world, including their medical clinic.

"It really stops a lot of our operations because most of it is done on the computer. We can do local stuff, but when we're interfacing with other organizations or with other systems, there's no way for us to do that," said Dial.

Officials with Red Bird Mission told me a mountain was one of the closest spots to get any cell phone service. The problem is it's miles away, and that lost time to travel could result in problems if there's an emergency.

Crews were out Wednesday fixing wires that had been cut by thieves during the past few days.

One crew spent time repairing a television cable line that was cut in addition to the phone line below it.
