CLAY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Crews continue to investigate last night's crash while the Clay County community is reacting to the shocking news.
We continue to learn more about what caused an AirEvac helicopter to crash, as you can imagine those in the community are reacting to the news as well.
WKYT decided to go out and talk to locals, to see what they knew or if they saw anything.
We actually happened to stumble upon the one couple that saw the whole thing unfold from their living room window and they recapped the events for us.
For those that live by Paces Creek Elementary, listening the AirEvac helicopter take off and land is normal, but late Thursday night, Kelly and Kenneth Bailey, who live just down the road, say something sounded different.
Kelly says, "The sound was more like a bogged down sound. It was rrrrrrrrrr sound like that."
Bailey says it was moments after that sound that the ground shook as if an earthquake were occurring. As she went to her window to see what happened, she says she saw something she never expected.
"He ran outside and I went to the window and I saw this huge fireball, just huge, " says Kelly. "I'm running after him, we're actually the first ones on the scene we showed up you just couldn't see anything but fire."
Kenneth says, "Something that hit us while we were standing there. Someone had died, we didn't know it was more than one but someone had died.”
A make shift memorial is being set up by those within the community for the victims.
