12 charged after sex offender compliance roundup

Sixteen law enforcement agencies came together to make sure registered sex offender in six Kentucky counties were obeying the law.

The U.S. Marshal's and Kentucky State Police worked with officials in Boyle, Garrard, Jessamine, Lincoln, Mercer and Rockcastle counties to conduct compliance checks on registered sex offenders, over two days in April.

Police checked on 204 sex offenders, leading to twelve arrests.
Eight were arrested for being non compliant. One of the offenders in Mercer County was arrested for possession of weapons by a felon. Ten guns were seized from his home.

A computer was taken in Lincoln County, belonging to one of the six additional sex offenders who were charged with violating the social networking statue. Those offenders had Facebook accounts, which is prohibited in Kentucky for registered sex offenders.

Three sex offenders are now considered fugitives and warrants have been issued for their arrest.

This operation is the seventh of its kind in Kentucky by U.S. Marshal's.

"In every one that we've done so far, we see that there's other crimes, just like the weapons and the Facebooking, we found marijuana one time, pills one time," said Loren Carl with the U.S. Marshals Office.

"We went to every one of the homes with the idea that we were not sure what was going to happen. We knew these individuals were already on a registry and the opportunity for other crimes was there," said Lt. Chad Powell, with Harrodsburg Police.

Along with those twelve arrests, five other registered sex offenders are still being investigated for non-compliance.

Of the 204 compliance checks, 63 were sex offenders who had moved into Kentucky from other states.
