DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The first trial against a former inmate
charged with rioting and starting fires at a central Kentucky
prison two years ago has begun.
Forty-year-old Newell Stacy is charged with arson and rioting.
Prosecution witnesses testified Tuesday about the 2009 melee
that destroyed six buildings at Northpoint Training Center in
Danville and left five dorms uninhabitable. The prison is currently
One key witness was corrections Sgt. Tim Peaveyhouse, who
testified that he watched Stacy set fire to a roll of toilet
tissue, then light a fire in a trash can and throw it on the roof,
according to The Advocate-Messenger.
Defense attorney Susanne McCollough questioned why Peaveyhouse didn't identify Newell during his first interview with internal affairs after the riot.
Testimony was expected to wrap up Wednesday.
