Accident claims lives of two Danville teens, grandmother

The ground still bears the scars of the accident that took the lives of three people yesterday here in Boyle County. The coroner says it's one of the worst accidents he's worked in over thirty years of service.

"It's just a horrific accident. One of the worst in all of my years, and that been a lot of years, that I've seen," says Mike Wilder.

16-year-old Mason Steigerwald was driving this red Mercury Cougar when the accident happened yesterday afternoon. Officials say he was trying to turn left from Stewarts Lane onto Highway 300. He pulled out into the path of a Jeep Cherokee that t-boned the Cougar, sending both vehicles into a ditch along the side of the road. The impact killed Steigerwald, his grandmother, 74-year-old Marie Baker, and his girlfriend, 16-year-old Mackenzie Weddle.

"You have an accident of this nature, with a lot of compartment intrusion. It was just a non-survivable accident," says Boyle County Sheriff Marty Elliott.

Elliott says Mason and Mackenzie were likely killed instantly.

"The driver and the passenger behind him-it appears that they were pretty much killed instantly. The other person in the vehicle, she died while EMS was responding."

Officials who responded to the scene say all three people were wearing seat belts in the vehicle and they don't think speed was a factor.
