DANVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - Travis Gaines had recently signed to play baseball at Centre College and those behind the bracelet fund drive say they can understand what he and his family are going through.
"It just broke my heart to hear about it," said Centre senior and baseball player Matt Freire.
"As someone who has dealt with several injuries myself, I know that sometimes the mental aspect is more serious than the physical," he said.
He doesn't personally know Gaines, but he knows that the team looked forward to what he could bring to the Danville campus next year.
"Just seeing how strong he is through this whole process, qualities like that fit on any team," he said.
Freire and his family decided to take their concern a step further and designed bracelets that will be sold at Centre events and local high school games.
"It's nothing too in depth, it's just his name and number and a baseball, just a reminder to say a prayer for him," he said.
The bracelets will be sold for about $5, but donations of lesser amounts will be accepted as well.
The baseball team has their own fund drive taking place and the softball team will be raising money for the family at one of their games this weekend.
