Corn fields vandalized

Disgust and unbelief are among the reactions to the damage caused in three Boyle County cornfields.

“I don’t understand why anyone would do anything to her at 94,” said Wanda Lanham.

Her 94-year-old mother owns 100 acres of corn, at least four of which are now laying in ruins, destroyed by what police think were vandals who drove through the fields.

“At this time all we can do is speculate on whether it was joyriding, having fun, or something sinister. We don’t know,” said Deputy Jody Adams of the Boyle County Sheriff’s Dept.

State police estimate at least $10,000 in corn was destroyed.

Today police took pictures of tire tracks..and gathered evidence amidst the destruction.

“We’re confident we have enough to start an investigation, about all I can say right now,” said Deputy Adams.

Corn is a big part of the livelihood in the small farming community of Forkland.

“I think everyone needs to be on the lookout. There’s a lot more corn, it could happen to anybody,” said Lanham.

Police say whoever is caught will be facing felony charges, based on the amount of damage done.
