Doctor given 5 year sentence for wife's death

A doctor convicted in the death of his wife found out Tuesday morning how long he'll spend in prison for the crime.

A Boyle County judge sentenced Doctor Steven Hall to five years in prison for killing his wife, Isabel, last year with a pontoon boat.

After the sentence was handed down, Hall's attorney vowed to fight it.

In August, a jury recommended Hall spend five years in prison for the death of his wife. A judge followed that recommendation Tuesday.

Hall's attorney, Steve Romines, told the judge, "The court will rarely have a candidate more appropriate for probation."

Romines then asked the judge to probate the five year sentence.

The judge declined, saying because a death occurred, the crime was too serious.

The jury convicted Hall of manslaughter. Hall hit his wife, Isabel, with a pontoon boat on Herrington Lake in May 2009.

Hall's attorney is now filing for an appeal.

"We'll be filing for that today," Romines said. "Can't file it until after final sentencing. We'll file the notice today."

Hall was taken back into custody after the sentencing.

Having been in jail since his arrest in May 2009, Hall is already eligible for parole.

In addition to the appeal, Hall's attorney says he'll be working toward parole as well.

The case will now go to a court of appeals.
