Injured woman flown from scene of boat crash

Emergency workers tell NEWSFIRST it was late afternoon when a man and woman crashed what is described as a 12-foot aluminum fishing boat along Herrington Lake.

"When we got there, you could see the boat in the middle of the lake still continuing to spin in a clockwise fashion," Boyle County Fire Lieutenant Jim Harris said.

Harris explained it was a stump that caused the crash when the boat struck it. "With as small as the stumps were at that location, it's very possible they could have just overlooked it," Harris said.

Witnesses say shortly after the crash, another fishing boat approached the site, and with the help of a woman who lives nearby, they were able to get the couple to the staircase of a zipline post.

From that post, the woman and the other two boaters were able to bring the couple onto a boat dock while the crashed boat was still spinning out of control.

Witnesses say the woman who crashed sustained serious lacerations including some to her face. Emergency workers took the woman by ambulance to a nearby helicopter, which took her to UK Hospital. Harris says the man seemed shaken but uninjured. "The other boaters did take him back," Harris said, "so that he could follow 'cause unfortunately there was no room for him to ride in the ambulance."

Harris credits those who helped the couple before emergency workers arrived for playing a vital role in the rescue.

Witnesses say the couple involved in the crash told them they were in town from Louisville. Their names have not been released.
