High winds down power lines and trees across central Kentucky

Strong winds have been causing problems around the bluegrass Thursday night.

Trees and power lines fell across roads and front yards and even caused some damage.

WKYT’s Jordan Vilines tracked the storms in Lexington and Danville on Thursday and has the story:

The caution tape strung between the two trees in front of Patrick Cleveland’s Danville home weren’t used as a Halloween decoration; the sound of chainsaw wasn't a sound effect and the folks stopping by his home on Alta Avenue weren't trick-or-treating.

“When I came home I wondered why that caution tape was there and why that tree was hanging down so low,” Cleveland told us Thursday afternoon. “I just called my family and they came out and we started cleaning it up.”

Each of those sights and sounds were actually a result of a tree two stories tall that was snapped during the strong storm.

“It could’ve fallen and hit the house or it could’ve fallen into the bedroom. Thank goodness it didn't”

Cleveland says the tree has stood in his front yard for 15 years and has withstood a number of storms, but apparently it couldn't withstand Thursday's storm.

“The last ice storm we had I thought it was going to come down then but it didn’t. It has been strong but it just took that wind from Thursday to knock it over.”

Despite the fact that he spent most of his Halloween clearing brush and hauling wood out of his yard, he’s still trying to see the silver living.

“It actually came at a good time because now we will be able to use the wood from the tree to heat our home for the winter.”

The strong winds moved into Lexington just a few hours later, causing damage to one home on Richmond Avenue after a large tree fell onto a man’s back porch and destroyed half of the railing.

“I knew something hit it but I didn’t know what it was. The first thing I did was look out the window and all I saw was leaves so I knew something was wrong,” said Eric Reed, who was in the process of renovating his home when his porch was ruined.

So far, there have not been any reports of injuries in Danville or Lexington as a result of Thursday’s storm.
