Salt running out in Estill County

ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The Estill County Road Department is almost out of salt, crews are now using gravel to treat roads.

Only eight tons of salt remain in the county's salt barn. Every pound will be conserved.

"We are trying to hold on to that so we can get to our hospitals and nursing homes," said Judge-Executive Wallace Taylor.

The county's supplier is only releasing salt to contracted agencies. Which is bad news for Taylor, who has been on the phone all weekend looking for a new supplier.

He found some salt suppliers but the price is four times higher than what they've been paying.

"We are trying alternative measures to save that money," said Taylor.

The alternative is finely crushed limestone. The rocks will provide traction for drivers on hills and curves. It's been in use since Friday and is considered to have worked well.

The stone comes from Boonesboro Quarry.
