Developing: Officials with Kentucky Coal Association confirm at least 500 layoffs from Arch Coal

2:20pm Update:

We have received the final numbers from Arch Coal about the number of layoffs and where they are located. These letters were sent to the Associated Press, who forwarded them along to us.

Here are the official numbers:

Knott County & Raven complexes-259
Flint Ridge complex-131
Rowdy Gap complex-49

1:30pm Update:

Floyd County Judge Executive R.D. "Doc" Marshall has forwarded Mountain News a letter his office received from Arch Coal about the layoffs in his county.

The letter, which is attached to this article, shows the Rowdy Gap mine in Hazard, the entire Flint Ridge complex in Breathitt County, and the Knott County and Raven complexes located at Kite.

These layoffs will leave four people at the Floyd County office without a job.

11:15am Update:

Officials in the Pike County Judge Executive's office tell WYMT Arch Coal officials tell them more than 500 miners will be laid off and the mines they work at will be idled. They were told no one in the county will be affected.

11:10am Update:

Perry County Judge Executive Denny Ray Noble tells Mountain News Arch Coal officials tell him the layoffs are permanent.

11am Update:

Bill Bissett with the Kentucky Coal Association confirms to WYMT more than 500 miners will be laid off as part of a series of cuts by Arch Coal across the state.

have been contacted about proposed layoffs across the region today.
