PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - The University of Pikeville officially has a new president.
The inauguration for Dr. James Hurley was held Friday.
It is the dawn of a new era at UPIKE as they officially welcomed Dr. Hurley as the new president.
Hurley is the 20th UPIKE president and the first alumnus of the university to serve in the position.
"It's a humbling experience. I'm very proud to be the first alum, and it's a gratifying experience," he said.
He says his plans include continuing to grow the university and serve the people of Appalachia by educating them here at home.
"What I didn't want is this to be about me. I wanted it to be about our 13,000 alumni and all of our students," said Hurley
Hurley follows in the footsteps of what he calls many great leaders and served most recently as UPIKE Vice President under former Governor Paul Patton.
"I have every confidence that you will succeed. You have been an indispensable part of our progress these past four years," said Gov. Patton.
Hurley says he hopes to continue leading the faculty and students to success at his alma mater.
