Lt. Governor discusses strategy to improve economic development in Eastern Ky.

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - The Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce hosted an economic development luncheon with the Lieutenant Governor on Monday. Business and community leaders from throughout the region discussed their strategy to improve economic development in Eastern Kentucky.

The message was teamwork as Lieutenant Governor Jerry Abramson said to the crowd, "Together you can make the difference you want for yourselves, for your kids, and for your grandkids."

Chambers from across the region are coming together as a united front to get new jobs to Eastern Kentucky.

Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce President, Jared Arnett says, "It is time to work together and we are excited to be a part of that. At the end of the day we all think we will benefit from this."

Lieutenant Governor Abramson says, "Really applaud those who have joined eight chambers together under the umbrella of Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, for one Eastern Kentucky. They are marketing the eight counties for job development and investment. To me that is the way you have got to do it everywhere in the country and in the Commonwealth."

Working together to market the region to potential investors is what officials say they are striving for. Fran Jarrell, from Paintsville/Johnson County Chamber of Commerce says, "We want to work as a region and have production all around, that is why we do things together as a group."

Lieutenant Governor Abramson urged the crowd to market the entire region to potential investors and then, "Let the decision makers make the ultimate decision to which city or county they will locate, because the entire region will benefit."

Officials say they are very pleased with the results of functioning as separate chambers partnering together on various events and initiatives.
