JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - An Eastern Kentucky church is making sure Hospice patients in the region have a reason to smile through a unique ministry.
It is a simple concept explains ministry organizer Bonnie Hughes, "There's a lot of people out there that need a little visit and a little ray of sunshine in their homes." That concept has blossomed into the D.A.I.S.Y., or Delivering An Inspirational Smile to You, ministry.
The Little Paint Church of God has been working with Appalachian Hospice to reach out to patients. Volunteer Raymond Hayden says, "It is rewarding thing to talk to these people and see how much life comes to their eyes when we walk in with these flowers and walk in with our prayers, they're hopes rise."
Organizers of the D.A.I.S.Y. ministry say a unique aspect of this ministry is where exactly they get the flowers. Hughes explains, "From showers, from weddings, and mainly we get them from funerals when families have excessive flowers. As opposed to taking them out and being there in the cemetary where they fade away quickly, if they donate them we re-purpose those for these hospice patients."
While the flowers bring a smile, the relationships are what this ministry is all about. Hughes says the ministry allows them to, "Minister in a way to say, has everything been alright with you and the Lord?"
Folks from D.A.I.S.Y. have been visiting Russell Walker for awhile and have formed a friendship with Walker and his family. Walker says, "When you get to be 87 years old, you like to have friends around you...they are good friends"
The ministry is looking for more volunteers and churches who would like to get involved.
