In an effort to call attention to continued and increased coal mine safety awareness, the Kentucky Coal Academy is holding a press conference on Monday, September 13 at 2 p.m. at the state capitol in Frankfort. At the press conference, Kentucky Secretary of the Cabinet of Energy and Environment Dr. Len Peters will sign a proclamation on behalf of Gov. Steve Beshear declaring September “Kentucky Coal Miner Safety Awareness Month.” The proclamation is part of the Kentucky Coal Academy’s month-long coal mine safety campaign. While quality, efficient, state-of-the-art mine training is the mission of the Kentucky Coal Academy, the state-funded program, which operates through the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, also works to facilitate increased safety and to improve the overall image of the coal industry. Kentucky Coal Academy Executive Director Dr. William Higginbotham said this year’s coal mine fatalities have made coal miners, operators, trainers, and the community in general more attentive to safety standards.
