FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) -
There may be 16 cameras on site, but it wasn't enough to deter burglars from breaking into the Storage Mart on Twilight Trail in Franklin County. Detectives with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office say the crooks forced their way into forty-nine units on Sunday.
"It the largest I have seen in Franklin County. This is one of the most secure storage facilities in Franklin County," says Detective Sergeant, Shane Weber.
It's unknown how much the thieves got away with but detectives say they left behind significant damage.
"I can't give a number of value on property taken, but I can say that there are several thousand dollars worth of damage to the storage units themselves, the doors, the locks, the hinges," adds Weber.
The burglars snuck in through the back of the business.
"There is one spot in the back of the storage facility that the fence was cut. The chain link fence was cut and slid down, where they were packing items out to a waiting vehicle at the bottom of the hill," Weber says.
Detectives are now reviewing surveillance video and hoping to find the burglars before they have the chance to strike again.
"We haven't had any other reports of surveillance units hit besides this one. With the magnitude of this one, I hope no other storage units get hit," says Weber.
