FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Heavy construction equipment is being moved onto Pfeiffer Fish Hatchery property in Franklin County, and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources says a popular fishing access point to Elkhorn Creek will close indefinitely as a result.
Public tours of the hatchery in northern Franklin County have been suspended, and walk-in access to the creek from the hatchery grounds will close. Construction preparations for a $5 million expansion project at the hatchery start this week. Completion is scheduled by June 2013.
Pfeiffer is one of two fish hatcheries operated by the state agency. The other is Minor Clark Fish Hatchery near Morehead.
Access to fish at Elkhorn Creek is still open at several locations in Franklin and Scott counties. For more information, visit http://fw.ky.gov and search for "VPA."
