Frankfort's Magee's Bakery sold

The owners of Magee's Bakery said they had no idea how many people would stop by to get one last taste of the family business.

"Charlie Schwartz is the best baker in all the land!" said Judy Young.

After decades in business here in downtown Frankfort, Charlie Schwartz is retiring.

"It's finally time to call it quits," he said.

Charlie's father bought the bakery in the late 1960s. He'd worked at Lexington's Magee's Bakery and wanted to carry on that name, so that's what he called this store. Charlie took over 25 years ago, and eventually a third generation was brought up in the store.

"My daughter grew up in the place," he said.

"Closing the doors is like losing a home and a family," said 18-year-old Pamela Schwartz.

The family is selling everything, including the recipes for all their creations.

"It's going to be the same. They want to keep the transition the same and the quality good," said Charlie Schwartz.

Customers who've flocked here for decades packed the front room to get one last taste from the Schwartz family.

"It's just been a real special place here in downtown Frankfort for a lot years," said Larry Weese.

Pamela Schwartz says while she's sad to leave the shop, she's not ready to continue the baking tradition elsewhere.

"Eighteen years and I'm ready to retire," she said with a laugh.

Charlie Schwartz says right now, his retirement plans include plenty of rest and relaxation.
