House committee expected to vote on budget

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - An austere state budget is expected to get its first legislative vote on Tuesday.

Members of the House Appropriations and Revenue Committee are set to vote on the two-year, $19.5 billion spending plan.

The meeting is set for 10 a.m. in the Capitol Annex, a legislative office building next door to the Capitol.

The budget proposal to be considered would eliminate cost-of-living increases for state and local government retirees in a move that advocates have sharply criticized.

Some 200,000 retirees had been slated to receive 1.5 percent increases.

Appropriations and Revenue Chairman Rick Rand said financial woes have led to cuts to most government agencies and programs.
