SHELBY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass opens Thursday, as result, officials expect heavy traffic in that area of Shelby County.
The mall is located off Interstate 64, in Simpsonville.
"We are definitely expecting an increase in traffic," said Trooper Paul Blanton, Kentucky State Police.
The traffic will be managed by Kentucky State Police, Simpsonville Police, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
More than 40,000 people are expected to shop opening day.
For opening weekend, Trooper Blanton says State Police will have an increased presence in the area.
KYTC crews will be on site to manage traffic signals, electronic signs will direct drivers to the correct lanes and to parking areas, and Safe Patrol vehicles will be nearby to assist drivers with car trouble.
Drivers going to the mall, are asked to stay in the right lane. Drivers going through the area, are advised to use the left lane.
"We are familiar with the challenges that come with a new attraction opening up. We believe we'll be able to get the people to the shops and home safely," said Blanton.
State Police will also be active on social media, offering traffic alerts or updates on Facebook and Twitter.
The area of I-64 near Exit 28 is under construction in both directions. Crews are widening the interstate to three lanes, it will remain two lanes until some time in August.
