The crime was caught on tape. A man accused of hitting a police officer with his car answered to felony assault charges this morning in court.

Russell Wheat faces felony assault charges in Frankfort after his arrest late Friday night. It all started when Officer Byron Redmon pulled over a truck in a traffic stop for a suspected DUI.

The man behind the wheel, who police say was Russell Wheat, put the truck in reverse, trying to get away. The video shows Officer Redmon keeping up with the truck, but then the driver pulls forward, dragging Redmon with him.

The truck then crashed into the side of a parked car, narrowly missing other customers at a gas station. After that collision, the truck sped away, just missing another car as it leaves.

An injured Officer Redmon staggered to his cruiser to call for help. Police later found the truck abandoned in a neighborhood down the street. They searched for hours trying to track down the driver, then found Wheat in a wooded area and arrested him.

Because Wheat faces a felony charge, he automatically entered a not guilty plea. He is behind bars on a $100,000 full cash bond, and will be back in court in Feb. 15.

Officer Byron Redmon was treated for his injuries Friday after the incident, and released from hospital the same day.
