Man arrested after slamming van into deputy's cruiser

A man is facing charges after police say he slammed his van into a deputy's cruiser.

Franklin County Sheriff's deputies were called to a disturbance just before 3:00 Monday morning on Appomattox Drive. While in route, officers were notified that a man in the home was holding his parents at knife-point.

The Sheriff tells 27 Newsfirst that as officers arrived at the scene, the suspect took off in the family van. As authorities tried to stop him, they say the man, 22-year-old Richard Lancaster, rammed a deputy's cruiser head on. Lancaster's van then caught fire. The deputy ended up trapped inside his cruiser, and had to kick the door open to escape.

Police say Lancaster took off from the scene on foot. Sheriff's deputies say they found him a short time later in his parents' basement. We're told deputies had to use a taser on him before arresting him.

Authorities say the deputy will be okay.

Lancaster is charged with attempted murder and evading police, among other charges.
