Sheriff: Man rammed cruiser, charged with attempted murder

22-year-old Richard Lancaster was arrested early this morning near his home just North of Frankfort. Authorities say he tried to kill a deputy when he slammed into the cruiser, but his family says they don't believe that.

"I don't see my son trying to hurt anyone like that. That is...that's not in his nature," say Crystal Lancaster.

Lancaster says her son, Richard, has bipolar disorder and had gone into a rage late last night. She says they left the house and called the sheriff's office for help. Sheriff Pat Melton says when they got there, they spotted Lancaster driving a car and tried to stop him.

"He was moving pretty good, especially when the trooper hit the blue lights on him. He came straight around his mom and dad and straight into the sheriff's cruiser. Our deputy was trapped for a few minutes and had to kick the door out. The van caught on fire. As soon as he crashed into the car, he bailed out of the van and fled on foot," says Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton.

Sheriff's deputies found Lancaster in the basement of his parents' home and arrested him after a struggle. Lancaster now faces a charge of attempted murder, but his family says he's a good kid who just needs help.

"I hope they do get him evaluated and help him. I know he's done wrong. I expect him to pay for his doings, but I know there's also other circumstances that made that happen," says Crystal Lancaster.

The sheriff says that deputy could return to duty as early as this evening.
