State Police say traffic deaths are down in 2013

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - There's less than a week left in 2013, but Kentucky is on pace to have the fewest number of motor vehicle fatalities in the last five years.

Kentucky State Police reports 625 motor vehicle fatalities this year. In 2012, there were 738 deaths at the same point.

Another trend State Police are tracking is the number of drivers wearing their seat belts. Since 2005, that number has gone from 66% to 82%.

Seat belts, safer cars, faster response time from emergency officials and overall awareness of traffic laws are all contributing to the fall in fatalities this year.

"We are encouraging the public to buckle up every time, all the time," said Trooper Paul Blanton.

Fayette County had seven fewer motor vehicle deaths this year compared to last year.

Franklin County had two fewer fatalities.
