Sheriff: New tips in rare bourbon theft case after video released

More Video...

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The investigation into the theft of a rare Kentucky bourbon is ongoing, but investigators in Franklin County say they have a new lead after he was caught on camera.

Nearly 200 bottles of 20-year-old Pappy Van Winkle were stolen from the Buffalo Trace Distillery, in Franklin County, last week. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office says that's nearly $26,000 worth of a rare but popular bourbon. Investigators said it may have taken a couple of months to steal, and they said it may likely be an inside job.

"We're looking at the big picture, obviously internal theft is a part of that puzzle," explained Sheriff Pat Melton.

The case may now have a lead, after investigators were tipped of to a man they think might know something.

"We have developed a lead and have a person of interest."

On Sunday, a Hardin County liquor store says this man offered to sell them a large quantity of the 20-year-old Pappy Van Winkle. The same type was reported missing from the distillery.

"Obviously detectives are very anxious to interview him," stated Sheriff Melton.

There's just one catch. They don't know who this man is. On the video he's seen wearing a Bardstown High School sweatshirt and driving a green and tan Ford F-150. That's about all they can say at this point, and the Sheriff's Office is turning to the public for help.

"This has rapidly developed today and yesterday," said the Sheriff, adding that this case has already gotten attention nationwide, and even as far away as Pakistan.

"We had no idea that it was going to get the attention that it got," he said, explaining that it might not be a bad thing.

"The hotter you make it the harder it is for them to sell," said of the case awareness, "and if everybody knows that's hot bourbon, people aren't going to want to take it."
