A man on Washington state's most wanted list is behind bars in Kentucky.
Frankfort Police arrested 28-year-old Adam Peyton. They say he took off from an officer who approached him. The officer chased after the man, but he got away.
A short time later, a witness told police he saw a man break the window of an apartment on Deepwood Drive and climb in. Officers went to that apartment and arrested Peyton. He's charged with fleeing and evading police.
Officers also found that Peyton is wanted in Washington for assault of a child. Police there call him a violent offender. The most wanted registry in Washington says that Peyton is originally from Kentucky.
Law enforcement officials in Washington tell 27 News First that Adam Peyton was convicted and sentenced for assaulting his four month old son.
Police say the abuse was reported in April of 2007.
He was sentenced to 31 months in jail, and18-36 months of community supervision. Authorities say that he served his time but violated his probation.
Washington state police say that Peyton had a warrant out for his arrest since February 22, 2010.
Some residents of the Leawood Square Apartment complex were surprised to learn that a fugitive was living there.
"I'll tell you what. When I worked in corrections, myself I knew what they did but you do know what you're neighbor's going to do," says Frances Ringer, a neighbor of Peyton's.
"If you have a fugitive in your area who is charged in that state, with a violent act. And in fact is listed on the wanted print out in that state as a violent offender, of course you want to make sure he is incarcerated so that the community itself is safe," says Major Fred Deaton, with Frankfort Police.
