Woman charged with animal cruelty

Police say some adult pit bulls and their puppies….were all starving when they were rescued from a Elkhorn Street home in early February.

“And one of the pups was dead when we examined the area initially,” said Frankfort Major Fred Deaton.

The investigation started on February 1rst, the dog’s owner was finally arrested on warrants Tuesday.

“A mama (dog) and her 6 puppies…the mama was starved, the puppies full of worms,” said Angie Steward of the Franklin Co. Humane Society, which is now caring for the animals.

Police say Katanya Mason, 30, wasn’t caring for the animals. She is now facing charges of second degree animal cruelty.

“At least one of the adult pit bulls was very malnourished…in one of the photographs…the rib cage of the animas is showing,” said Major Deaton.

People who live on Elkhorn Dr. tell 27 NEWSFIRST that Mason let the dogs run loose…and one resident even said that one of the pit bulls killed her cat.

Why Mason had so many dogs isn’t known. But humane society folks aren’t surprised all of them are pit bulls…or that the mama dog…called Baby…had its ears cut off.

“No we see that quite often actually,” said Stewart.

A rescue group will likely take the puppies but Baby’s future is less certain. She needs a home.

“To show her what it is like to be loved…and put in a good home,” said Stewart.
