Firefighters rescue two boys from flooded Scott County creek

SADIEVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - Firefighters in Scott County say rising waters kept them busy Saturday and led to a rescue when two young boys became trapped in a swollen creek.

Little Indian Branch is just one of many creeks that flooded out of it's banks early Saturday morning. Two boys found out just how fast that water was rising. One, a 10-year-old, became trapped on a small island in the middle of the creek, but his 9-year-old brother was still in the water.

"He was holding on for dear life to a tree," said Elijah Muddiman.

A passing driver saw the boys and stopped to help them around 8 a.m.

"I told them to go get help and that my mother was right up the hill," Elijah said.

The driver honked his horn until Elijah's mother came to the road.

"He said 'Honey, I think your boys are down in the creek, they're yelling for they're momma to call 911,'" said Sarah Muddiman. "I was scared to death, I was shaking, I was screaming at them to hold on, that help was coming."

Scott County firefighters Joey Southworth, Pete Ackerman, and Jan Southworth were there within minutes.

"I went to the boy on the island first, he said he was more concerned with his brother who was hanging onto the tree," Joey Southworth said.

"He just ran right out in there, he didn't even think he just ran out there and got him and dragged him back to land," Sarah Muddiman said.

"I thought I was getting ready to fall into an eternal pit of absolutely nothing," Elijah Muddiman said.

Both boys were checked out by EMTs at the scene. Their mother says even thinking about what could have happened breaks her heart.

"I would have been lost without them, I was so scared for my babies," she said.

Muddiman says her sons have promised her they wouldn't sneak away like that again.

"I'm glad those boys are alright, that's what it's all about," Southworth said.
