SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - It's one of the major travel days of the year, and Wednesday night in Scott County, Interstate 75 became more of a parking lot after a major accident around 5:30 in the evening.

"It's pretty bad right now," started Deputy Robert Tackett, referring to the back up caused by a jack-knifed semi-truck.

The truck with the livestock trailer was empty when it was hit by a van and left across the middle of I-75 at the Cherry Blossom exit, mile marker 129.

"According to witnesses, the van was coming down the fast lane and made a late attempt to get over off the exit. And they made it across two lanes of traffic, but when they got to the third a semi was coming and hit it and obviously did a lot of damage," described Deputy Tackett.

All three lanes to the Interstate were closed off for nearly an hour and traffic was backed up for miles.

"Honestly, we are fortunate that we are able to use the emergency lane at this point. We're at least able to use that to divert some of the traffic," explained the deputy.

Traffic may have been moving, but not quick enough leaving many drivers parked on the highway.

"We were sitting in this traffic jam for so long that the gas light came on and we had to stop and get gas and feed the kids," said Chris Campbell from a gas pump at the Cherry Blossom exit.

Campbell and his family were making the trip from Florence to Lexington before coming to a standstill.

"It was pretty bad, people were even driving on the side of the road. I mean it was pretty nasty out tonight."

However, Campbell said much of his drive from Northern Kentucky was like that, saying there was a lot of stop-and-go traffic and he rarely hit the 70 mph speed limit.

"You're maybe going 50, if you're lucky."

According to the emergency crews, the two people inside the van were taken to UK Hospital to be treated, but they could not elaborate on the severity of their injuries. The truck driver was okay. No citations have been given at this time.
