Georgetown opens NAIA with win

Kansas City, Mo. - No. 7 seed Georgetown College (Ky.) opened day two action at the 2011 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship with an 83-76 victory Thursday against Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) at Municipal Auditorium.

Junior forward Vic Moses led all players with 24 points and 12 rebounds in leading the Tigers to their sixth consecutive win. Georgetown is now 30-4 on the season and advances to Friday's second round. The Tigers will square off with either No. 10 seed Southern Nazarene University (Okla.) or McKendree University (Ill.) Friday at 12:30 p.m. CT. Appearing in its 30th NAIA Division I National Tournament, Georgetown reaches the second round of tournament play since 2008.

Georgetown broke open a close game with a 12-3 run to build a 75-64 lead with 3:32 remaining. Five different players scored during the decisive stretch for the Tigers. The closest that Olivet Nazarene would come the remainder of the contest was at 78-72 on a basket by junior guard Antonio Marshall with 1:15 to play.

There were 10 lead changes - five for each squad - during the first half. Olivet Nazarene controlled the tempo in the opening moments before Georgetown reeled off 11 straight points to grab a 23-13 lead midway through the period. The Tigers slowly chipped away at the deficit, and used a 7-0 run later in the half to pull even at 33-33. But a three-pointer from senior guard Dillon Boggs gave the Tigers the lead once again, and Georgetown took a 40-36 lead into the locker room.

Junior forward Maurice Pearson added 14 points and nine rebounds for Georgetown, while senior guard Eddie Gray chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds. The Tigers held a 42-28 edge in rebounding against Olivet Nazarene.

Marshall paced Olivet Nazarene (21-12) with 18 points and six assists. Marshall also became the newest member of the Tigers' 1,000-point club during the contest. Senior forward Nick Klomstad registered 14 points, six rebounds and five assists in the effort, while senior Cory Hainlen and sophomore guard Ben Worner each scored 11 points for the Tigers. Junior forward Brandon Streets pulled down a team-leading 10 rebounds for Olivet Nazarene, which was making its 16th national tournament appearance.

Game Notes:
Georgetown -- Georgetown won its 50th all-time game in the NAIA Division I National Tournament ... the victory was the first for the program since 2008 and snapped a three-game losing streak at nationals ... the Tigers improve to 21-9 all-time in first-round games ... Vic Moses shot 12-of-12 from the field and had his sixth double-double of the season ... Georgetown had its 19th game with 80 or more points; the Tigers are 18-1 in those contests.

Olivet Nazarene - The Tigers are now 0-11 all time vs. Georgetown. The loss snaps ONU's season-long six-game winning streak. Olivet Nazarene moves to 12-16 in the national tournament, with their last win coming in 2006 in the second round over No. 1 Mountain State 76-65. ONU recorded 24 assists in the game, which improves on their average of 17.9 (third in the nation). Antonio Marshall became the 37th Tigers' player to surpass 1,000 career points. He needed 13 to reach 1,000 and he scored 18 on Thursday.
