With each hour of preparation, every stretch, every stride - Ryan Barts is closer to reaching his goal. Barts, a Special Olympics athlete, is heading to Athens, Greece this month to compete in the Special Olympics Summer Games.
Barts is already a decorated athlete and well known in Georgetown. The trip to Athens is costly and Georgetown fighters are holding the "Run for Ryan" charity bike ride Saturday, June 4, at the Georgetown Fire Department Station #3.
Barts, 22, hopes one day to help younger athletes reach their full potential. But for now, his focus is bringing a gold medal back to Central Kentucky.
"I'm going to win the gold medal. I just hope Usain Bolt isn't there!"
The Special Olympic World Summer Games in Athens begin June 25. Collin Lutz, a swimmer from Nicholasville, will also be competing. Both athletes are currently raising money for the trip which will cost an estimated $7,000
