Police look for thief targeting gas station

Scott County Sheriff Tony Hampton says thieves have stolen thousands of dollars in cash and tobacco products from gas stations in the county, but they've left behind a trail he's confident will lead investigators to them.

There have been four burglaries in five nights with thieves hitting the same two businesses twice, but investigators say the suspects are getting sloppy. The Scott County Sheriff says the men caught on surveillance cameras are responsible for all four burglaries starting last Tuesday at the Gas Depot Marathon on Frankfort Pike and the Finish Line Marathon on Porter Road.

In each case the suspects used the same method, breaking through glass, to quickly steal cash and tobacco products.

However, in one case they left behind a small tool investigators say is specifically used for demolition. In this case it was used to gain entry to the businesses.

Surveillance video shows the men in one case arriving in a bronze colored SUV, breaking in, and spending ten minutes inside the gas station.

Sheriff Hampton says he believes the men are from the area, possibly living close to the two businesses. "Obviously they're the same individuals, and I would think that they're desperate for money for something that they could possibly sell to get some fast money or to trade for drugs."

Since the burglaries began deputies have increased patrols in the area, and in one case the suspects hit the gas station just minutes after a deputy was there, leading the sheriff to believe the suspects may be watching deputies' movements.

The suspects are described as two Caucasian men. One has a stocky build, the other is a smaller man wearing over sized clothing and rolled up jeans. Both men were wearing toboggans. The were seen driving a bronze colored Chevy Blazer.

The owner of one of the businesses is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
