He returned home to a very warm welcome! A community comes together to honor a Central Kentucky police officer who spent a year serving in Afghanistan.

It was somewhat emotional, and very rewarding experience, as Detective James Wright was welcomed home to Georgetown. After spending more than a year in Afghanistan, he says he cherishes being back.

"It's awesome being back. It's hard being away from family and friends. It's overwhelming, I don't know what else to say. It's just nice to be back," Wright says.

The Georgetown Police Detective, along with his family, takes down the yellow ribbon placed on the side of the police department as reminder of Wright's deployment.

Wright returned to the States Monday, after spending more than a year overseas in Afghanistan serving as a commander, conducting criminal investigations.

"I'm very proud. And this is coming from the military side of it myself. It's a big honor for him to be standing here. A lot of families aren't as fortunate," says Georgetown Police Chief Greg Reeves.

Wright returned home to his wife and five children; and to a community, proud of his service with the 378th Reserve Unit, and eager to see him back in Georgetown.

"I'm very proud to say he is one of mine, and his family is a part of the police family we have here," Reeves says.

"We've got it good here in America. No doubt, it makes you appreciate it once you've been in a war zone. I've taken a lot from it," Wright says.

Detective Wright says he and his family now plan to spend some time vacationing in Florida. He says he will resume his duties as detective with Georgetown Police in the next few weeks.

Wright's deployment to Afghanistan was his second time overseas. He served in Iraq from 2003 to 2004.
