Tense moments at the Center of Town Community Center as children were rushed to safety seconds before part of the roof blew off.

"We heard the storm outside as it was coming," explained Recreational Specialist Bronson Harris, who was supervising lunchtime.

"It sounded like something was ripping," continued Robin Allen, the Director of the center.

Harris said "We heard a big bang and the ceiling tiles started to shake real bad so I ran the children out."

Harris says he and another teacher got the four and five year olds to a safe place in the building and couldn't believe his eyes when he returned to the cafeteria.

"When I went back in there, things just started to fall and it looked like a rainfall--- water was just everywhere and tiles were falling," he said.

"I went to the back door and could just see pieces," Allen said while talking about the roofing scattered all over the property.

Firefighters helped salvage anything they could. They removed every piece of furniture in the room, but some was already ruined. Everyone there credited the teachers for getting the small children out of harms way, saying it could have been worse.

"Glad everything's ok-- I think it's the quick action of the staff to get the kids out of immediate area of danger," Allen said.

"Well, as a recreation specialist, we're quick on our feet," Harris said smiling. "That's one of the things we do cause you're working with kids, so you have to be quick minded."

Insurance adjusters will be at the community center in the next day or so. Crews have tarped the roof in an effort to prevent further damage.

We're told Check Point, the child care center inside the community center, will be closed the rest of the week, because of the damage the storm caused.
