St. John School in Georgetown receives national recognition for recycling

SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A Scott County school's push to go green has them receiving some national recognition.

During an assembly Monday afternoon, students, staff and teachers at St. John Catholic School in Georgetown were recognized for their recycling efforts.

With an enrollment of just 175 students, St. John competed against schools across the nation in two recycling contests.

In the "Great American Can Roundup" St. John was the top school in the state and 19th nationally.

In the "Dream Machine Recycle Rally" St. John came in fifth nationally collecting nearly 800,000 bottles and cans.

"We couldn't do this without our parent volunteers," said Alison Witajewski, coordinator of St. John's green team. "We have parents who come in every morning and count what the kids bring in. So it's one of the great things about being at St. John, we're like a family, it's more than a school."

St. John School was awarded three thousand dollars from the contests to make green improvements at their school.
