Robbery victim speaks out about suspect's new crimes

(WKYT) - A man who was arrested Monday for stealing from a Lexington Walmart is also the man accused of robbing a Georgetown shoe store earlier this year.

It all started Monday night, when a loss prevention officer spotted Matthew Howard, 24, stealing from the Nicholasville Road Walmart. An employee detained Howard in an office to wait for police. That's when he climbed into the ceiling and then fell to the ground just as police arrived.

WKYT has learned this isn't Howard's first run-in with the law. In January, police say Howard punched a store clerk and threatened to kill her and her family, during a robbery at Georgetown Shoes.

Howard was indicted on robbery and persistent felony offender charges. That case is still on-going. According to the Scott County Circuit Court, he's been out on a $30,000 bond since June.

The victim of the robbery in Georgetown was surprised to hear that Howard was released from jail on bond, but says she isn't surprised that he's now committed another crime.

"I'm just in awe at the system. I understand the laws very well, but I'm just shocked that they wouldn't consider that he is highly dangerous and he's not going to stop unless he's behind bars for good," says Tracy Thompson, a victim in the Georgetown Shoe's robbery.

Howard faces a list of new charges in Lexington, including assault, criminal mischief and resisting arrest.

According to Scott County Circuit Court, Howard has a status hearing scheduled in November for his crimes in Georgetown.
