It's a place we go to mourn and remember loved ones. But a Central Kentucky cemetery became the scene of an unthinkable crime.
Vandals damaged more than a dozen headstones at Georgetown Cemetery by spray painting graffiti on them.
"It's just hard to put into words, it's a disgrace," said Lt. Robert Swanigan, with Georgetown Police.
Swanigan says the vandals hit sometime over the Thanksgiving weekend, causing thousands of dollars in damage.
"It's one thing to graffiti a bridge, or business, but a gravestone, that's crossing the line," Swanigan said.
Some of the headstones damaged date back to the Civil War.
"My heart, our hearts at the Georgetown Police Department, goes out to the families who are now being forced to deal with this," Swanigan said.
Police also say the same vandals are likely behind break-ins at three nearby businesses over the weekend.
"We can't say it's a definite right now, but it's definitely a possibility," said Swanigan.
Police say they are following up on leads, but so far, no arrests.
