Winning the lottery is a dream for many but a reality for only a small portion of society.

Someone who knows about winning big in Kentucky is David Edwards and his then fiance, Shawna Maddux. Edwards won $27 million off of a Kentucky Powerball Ticket back in 2001.

"I'd like to accept it with humility. I want this money to last for me and my future wife," says Edwards after accepting his check.

The couple eventually married but would later divorce. They spent time in between Kentucky and Florida. According to a Florida newspaper, David had a criminal past and Shawna had a substance abuse problem before the money. But after winning, their problems only escalated.

From the high life as a lottery winner now to a jail cell in Scott County.
Just last month police in Georgetown say Shawna Johnson stabbed her boyfriend at the Winners Circle Motel.

"Mr. McIntre had receive aproximately 10 to 11 stab wounds. Non of them were life threatening but he did receive stitches," says Sgt. Jeff Greenfield, with Georgetown Police.

Johnson now awaits her day in court for a first degree assault charge. Police say if convicted, Johnson could face a minimum of 10 years in jail.

WKYT requested an interview with Shawna Johnson but she turned down our request.
