HARLAN, Ky. (WYMT) - Plans are underway to build a new Clover Fork Clinic in downtown Harlan to provide healthcare to anyone regardless of the ability to pay.

The Appalachian Regional Commission, or ARC, is providing a grant for construction.

Officials say the site of the old Harlan Hospital on East Mound Street will be home to the new Clover Fork Clinic.

"It will make a difference, and I think it will make people in the community feel better," said Britt Lewis, Clover Fork Clinic Administrator.

Officials say the current Harlan building is too small and outdated.

"Healthcare is a really critical issue and something the ARC likes to invest in," said Earl Gohl, ARC Federal Co-Chair.

The ARC is providing a $500,000 grant for construction.

"We really see it as a re-investment in an important operation, an important service that's provided for the community in the ARC footprint," said Gohl.

ARC officials say a healthy population will lead to a better economy.

"It provides jobs. It provides healthy individuals. It provides great opportunities for Harlan, so we're very pleased to be a part of the investment here and to work with the clinic to provide great services," said Gohl.

The new building will have nine exam rooms, X-ray rooms, and a pharmacy.

"We're wanting to do something for the community will have here for years to come, hopefully," said Lewis.

Officials say it could potentially handle 3,700 patients per year.

Officials say the ARC grant will pay for one-third of the construction costs and coal severance funds and other funding will make-up the rest of the costs.
