HARLAN, Ky. (WYMT) - Update 6-25-13

The investigation into a large Harlan County burglary case continues.

Police now say the accused thief, Keith McMurray, admitted to the burglary at Sunshine Storage.

Harlan City Police recovered more items stolen from the Sunshine Storage building. Police say the thief stole thousands of dollars worth of items during several weeks.

Greg Shanks had several expensive items stolen from his unit at Sunshine Storage last week.

"My lock was cut off. I thought that was strange. I open it up and some of my stuff was gone," Shanks said.

Police say they caught 24-year-old Keith McMurray stealing from a unit on Sunday.

"He's admitted to breaking in to several more and taking from several," said Sgt. Matt Cope.

Police say 13 units had thefts.

Tuesday afternoon, they executed a search warrant on several vehicles and officers say they recovered many of the stolen items.

McMurray turned down WYMT's request for a jailhouse interview. Police say he now faces up to a dozen burglary charges.

"He could not give any explanation to why he was doing it. He was talking to people and it was his idea to go to the storage units and see what he could get," said Sgt. Cope.

Now victims are hoping to find what they lost. Police started letting burglary victims go through the recovered items on Tuesday.

"The Harlan Police have done a good job pretty much getting everything back to us," said Shanks.

"I'm just glad to get most of it back," said Patty Lewis.

Police say they are still looking for a few other items.

Harlan Police say McMurray might not have acted alone. Officers say other arrests are possible.

Original Story 6-24-13

Police say they caught a man in the act of breaking into storage units in Harlan County.

Harlan City Police arrested 24-year-old Keith G. McMurray at the Sunshine Storage building early Sunday morning.

The business owner says the thefts at Sunshine Storage units started last week.

"I'd been going over there and making my rounds and noticed there had been some locks cut," said Mike Anderson.

The Harlan Police Chief says around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, two officers on routine patrol caught McMurray carrying items from a storage unit to in his car. The officers determined he was not the owner of the items in the unit.

Police say they found two televisions, a microwave, jewelry, luggage, and other items in his car.

Police say he stole all from the storage building.

"Evidently got away with it once and wanted to try it again. Had some tools and lock picking equipment in his vehicle with him, so looks like he's done it more than once," said Mike Thomas, Harlan Police Chief.

Police charged McMurray with burglary and theft by unlawful taking. His bond is ten thousand dollars.

Police are still looking for the owners of all of the stolen items. If you have anything at the Sunshine Storage building, you are asked to check it out and call police if anything is missing.

Anderson says he is making some security changes in hopes of preventing more thefts.
