Volunteers from several states are preparing for a giveaway to help children of laid off coal miners and other struggling families.

The Lighthouse Mission in Bell County is organizing the event this Friday night. It will have everything to get children ready for school and help parents who can no longer afford clothes and supplies.

Volunteers from East Flat Rock, North Carolina are packing school supplies, sorting shoes, and folding clothes this week. It is all to get ready for the Lighthouse Mission's back to school giveaway.

"I think we take for granted we have what we need and some kids don't have basic supplies, pencils, paper, a pencil sharpener for school," said Debra Ramsey of East Flat Rock First Baptist Church in North Carolina.

Lighthouse Mission Directors say the need is even greater this year.

"We know now that the miners, there's over 1,600 of them out of work, so we're here to provide help for those out of the job that needs help in these hard times that we're having," said Sharon Teaney, Lighthouse Ministries Director.

Donations have poured in from all over the country to help the families. Organizers say they have enough to help 2,500 people.

All items will be handed out Friday in Pineville. There will also be free food and haircuts and games and music.

"It's really a great evening to come out and show the love of Christ to those out in the community and meet the needs of the community and their children," said Teaney.

The out of state volunteers are glad to help the laid off coal miners and other struggling families.

"If we can do this and spread God's love to other people just by giving them our time and our energy and helping out in this way, then why wouldn't I spend my time doing this," said Ramsey.

Donations are still accepted at Lighthouse Mission in Pineville.

The giveaway starts at 5:00 p.m. Friday, July 20th. Organizers recommend you get in line early. The event is at the old Bell County High football field off of 119.
