Federal judge considers whether media can talk to jurors in hate crime case

LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) - The federal judge for a recent hate crime trial is deciding whether the media can talk to the jurors.

Last month, a federal jury convicted cousins Jason and Anthony Jenkins on kidnapping charges but acquitted them on a hate crime charge.

They were accused of beating Kevin Pennington, who is gay.

Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove said the jurors could not discuss in public how they reached the verdict and their identity will stay private.

During a hearing, the Lexington Herald-Leader asked the judge for permission to talk to jurors about how they reached their verdict.

The judge plans to decide later.
