HARLAN, Ky. (WYMT) - The Harlan County Health Department is officially independent now.
The Harlan County Health Department separated from the Cumberland Valley District Health Department.
The Fiscal Court approved leaving the Cumberland Valley District Health Department earlier this year.
The separation started on July 1st for the new fiscal year.
"It's a great opportunity for Harlan County and for the health in Harlan County. I feel like we've become independent and all of our focus can go on improving and promoting preventative health in Harlan County," said Bobbie Crider, Interim Public Health Director for Harlan County.
Directors say this will not affect patients or services at the Harlan County Health Department building.
Officials say they are also considering hiring extra staff members.
