EVARTS, Ky. (WYMT) - Harlan County officials plan to beef up their warnings about the dangers of bears.
Leaders at the Black Mountain Off Road Adventure Area in Evarts will install around 200 new signs instructing visitors what to do if they encounter a bear.
"We tell them if they're at a distance to go ahead and take their pictures and stuff," said Dallas Gilbert, chairman of the Harlan County Outdoor Recreational Board. "But if the bear starts moving toward them, start clapping your hands a couple times and if that doesn't deter the bear from coming in, then just leave."
No bear attacks have ever been reported at the Adventure Area, Gilbert said.
"We want to protect them and keep them from getting hurt and killed by people that don't know better," he said. "Because a bear is a cute thing. Especially a cub."
Gilbert hopes to have the new signs up by this weekend.
