HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - There will be a new sheriff in Harlan County next year. Incumbent Marvin Lipfird lost in the Democrat primary.
Retired Kentucky State Police Captain Leslie "Smitty" Smith won the democrat primary by nearly 1500 votes and will move on to November.
In the Republican Primary, Jayson Howard beat John Teagle by 300 votes. Howard previously worked in law enforcement and the Sheriff's Office.
Smith and Howard both thanked supporters and say they are ready for the November race.
"I just like to thank everybody that got out and voted. All the people that supported me up to this point and I like to ask them to continue their support and move on into the November race," said Smith.
"November is long road away. We've just got to buckle down and work hard. Smitty is a good friend of mine. I've known him for years. I couldn't say a bad work about him, so either way we go, the people have spoke. We've already got change, so either way, we're in good shape," said Howard.
Lipfird did not want to comment on camera after the results were announced.
