HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Noah Hughes of Cumberland won a Ralph Gabbard Broadcasting Scholarship. He is one of three students in Eastern Kentucky to receive the honor. The awards were handed out last week during the WYMT Whayne Supply Mountain Basketball Classic.

Hughes attends Harlan County High School where he is already preparing for a career in broadcasting.

You can usually find Noah Hughes in the television studio at Harlan County High School or on the television screen. The high school senior delivers the news to the school.

"When I got here my freshman year, I did everything I could do, and I definitely made sure working in the TV studio was one of my main priorities. As soon as they gave me the chance, I was in here doing anything I could," Hughes said.

Hughes conducts interviews, writes stories, edits video, and anchors the news. He also writes for the school newspaper.

His love of broadcasting started as a child. He used to do play by play of family events.

"We went to my grandma's house, and they would play games on the court, and there's an area above the court, a shelter, and I would stand up there and play by play the games between my little cousins playing basketball and football," Hughes said.

He knows he wants to be behind the microphone for a career. He is following in his father's footsteps and going to Morehead State to study broadcasting.

"It's definitely something I want to keep doing. I love it and it's just something I feel like I'm supposed to do and it kinds of runs in the family," Hughes said.

He says the Ralph Gabbard Broadcasting Scholarship will help him pursue his dreams in college.

"I was so happy and so thankful and it will really help me," he said.

Maybe someday, you will see him deliver the news to an even bigger audience.
