An Eastern Kentucky mine closes its doors after pressure from inspections and overdue fines.
The Courier Journal reports K & D Mining Incorporated's mine number 17 in Highsplint stopped producing coal on June 22nd.
The company is not abandoning it's mine license, but officials have notified Congress it will not be reopening, leaving about 40 people without work.
Mine operators owe the federal government one and a half million dollars in overdue fines.
